ICON is staying engaged with the community through special events. The event for June is a mask decorating contest. Submit a creatively decorated protective mask between June 1 and July 31. Please be sure to include your contact information!
Masks don’t have to be medical quality. Commercial protective masks or homemade masks of all kinds can be your starting point. Contestants can provide their own masks to build their work of art upon, or obtain simple masks from ICON for $2 (supply is limited).
A First Prize of $100 and four $25 prizes have been donated by supporters. Prizes will be awarded on First Friday, August 7.
Drop off masks at ICON Gallery, from 2:00 to 5:00, Tuesdays through Fridays. Photos of your mask can be dropped off at ICON or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Masks or photos of your mask will be displayed in the Gallery front window, and photos of your masks will be posted here on now.icon-art.org. Remember, we can’t accept submissions without your contact info, so include it with physical masks or digital ones.
“We have a grand prize of $100 and we considered having four categories for the $25 prizes,” says ICON Director Bill Teeple. “But when we started thinking of categories, we came up with dozens of them. So we decided to choose categories for judging as the entries naturally divide up when they come in.”
Approaches to mask design could include painted, sewn, sculpted, mixed media, found objects, functional, non-functional, real masks or even digital or photoshopped masks. Masks by children are welcome. Subjects might include Covid19/medical, togetherness, nature/environmental, floral, ocean world, astronomical, sports, animals/pets, beautiful, silly/goofy, glamorous, patriotic, military, historical, supernatural, movies/movie stars, comic books/super hero, fantasy, metaphysical, famous paintings, world travel, romantic. You’re only limited by your imagination!
